text conversion

I have to perform some calculations on field values however the knotheads that defined the database structure made the fields character type and dumped mixed values numbers/text in the fields. I can pick out the number values using "between". Is there a conversion in crystal 8 that will allow me to do calculations like averaging, standard deviations etc??
