im new to illustrator coming from photoshop. im using the text along a path to place text in the shape of a circle (dont know if thats the best way to do this), but i want to lower the height of the letters while retaining the same width and curve profile giving each letter a more squaty apprearance. i have no idea how to do that. are there text shapes such as the arc one found in photoshop. any help would be appriciated.

I'm not sure I understand the question correctly, but I think what you're trying to achieve can be done without placing the text in a circle. Just add some standard text, then go to Object > Envelope Distort > Make With Warp. The usual Photoshop distortions can be found here.

If this menu item is grayed out, use one of the selection tools to select the text box (don't use the text tool to select).

As long as you can get the text on the path, letter height, width, kerning, tracking etc is handled by the Character window - same as Photoshop.

Text on path takes some getting used to. Try it and consult the Help. There are a number of little things

Forgot something - there are many of the same filters/effects in Ai as in PSD. For your purposes look at effects/warp.
