Text Abbreviations - Find and Replace

I have a table with a field of descriptions that are quite long. These descriptions need to be replaced with an abbreviated value. For example: a description may contain "Socketweld". This would be replaced with "Sw". I need to create a new table that will contain the original decsription, as well as the new description. The abbreviations will be contained within another table.
