If you can please post the model and/or make and process to test the POS for connectivity without having to charge a penny with an actual credit card every time.

Thanks

I am not sure that is possible. Contact the CC Processor to assist you with this.

This a what I use for Visanet aka heartland plus a few others. This won't work for every processor and supposedly they're phasing these test #'s out.
This is a visa test number
4444333322221111
Expiration has to be past the current date ie 0118

CVV should be blank

Charge at least a dollar.

Depending on your processor and what type of software you're running you'll get different response codes saying that it isn't a valid card or something to that effect. As long as you're getting a response code the card info is being sent to the processor and you're getting a response which means your config is good. If you're getting a software error then the number isn't being processed and you'll need a different test number.

However, I still use a real card fairly often. As long as you're testing small charges and refunds your bank won't flag you for suspicious activity.

Claytaco,

thanks for the card number tip. I have been using a visa gift card to test for a long time. Authorize, settle, refund settle, and my balance remains the same. Because its a visa gift card (prepaid) it never gets flagged as Visa could careless if fraud happens, they already have the money. Not sure if either of us answered his question but it does help us.

I was talking about a sequence of buttons to press to test the connection to the bank, no credit/debit card is required period.

Thanks

The sequence of buttons will be different for each POS system - not the brand/model, but each system. They're customized for each customer. Also, you can't connect to the cc processor from the POS terminals without supplying a credit card number. There's no "ping the bank" functionality that I've ever heard of.

Ok well it can be done as I have seen it several times but wish I took note.

I guess this is a dead issue here.
Thanks

Well, if you find it again for a Micros system, please let us know. I've been programming Micros 3700 systems since 1997 and have never seen any way to connect to the processor without entering a cc number. Maybe other POS systems can do it.

I've never heard of it with Aloha.

Back in the day I used Elavon as my processor, and I could ping their "servers" during testing with Elavon support on the phone, but that was more than likely their load balancer or firewall.

It's the same with Micros and MerchantLink. You can open a browser on the server and go to a URL they give you, but there's nothing like that from the terminals.

You can test the URL for most of the processors by just going to the url used for CCs. Some URLs will actually give you a screen to show that you got there.
I don't know about the 4444333322221111 card number above, I use it all the time to test in demo mode but if it were sent to the processor for a real transaction it fails. If you want a real test card number, google credit card test numbers and you will find many. Almost all work with exactly $1 on them. You can even settle the batch and it will go through. Some processors have their own CC test numbers.

My mistake? or too old?

I asked 2 clients ...which one of these two is called the POS?
They both pointed to the monitor and not the hand held device which you inserts/slide/tap the card.
There was no monitor back then.....did they call the hand held device the POS back then?

The only real way to test connectivity in micros is through the back office, via the credit card batch utility, and that assumes your driver supports it. On the diagnostic tab most drivers have a 'test auth connection' option at the very least. Short of running a card though, there is no way to test from the workstation in Micros.

Your credit card processor can supply you a dummy card. When you run these they will show a declined message if all is working. No money is ever transferred but the communication is tested.
