What is a good device to use for testing house pairs to extend T1 or DSL? I've been working at malls with old long sometimes spliced, bridged cat3 cabling with soldered posts, and the signal craps out by the time it reaches the destination. Something like the LEC uses to test the DSL signal, length, etc.

Search for DSL testers on eBay. This is the one I use. Be aware that DSL is changing and unless you spend the big bux your tester may become out of date by not being able to handle newer services. many of the newer DSL modems/routers have diagnostics built in so you could use one as a tester. Since most run on 12VDC a nice 12V 7Ah SLA battery would be sufficient to run the modem if there was no AC power.

The basic testing routine is to connect the tester to the demark and get a baseline then connect the tester where you want to install the DSL modem/router. Your results should be essentially the same.

TDRs with graphic displays can be very useful since one of the major problems with DSL are bridged taps. The problem is that bridged taps can be very tricky to find unless you connect the TDR from the CO end of the circuit.

Any reasonable priced TDR's recommended? I have a DSL modem I could use for DSL jobs. I need to extend some t-1's in mall with some crappy house pairs. The speed drops out to nothing by the time it reaches it's destination. I'd like to see how long they are and maybe get some t-1 extenders if need be. I don't know what effect the soldered posts have on it, but it jumps through a couple of them.

I know they have a lot of em, I was looking for a recommendation

I have been working on testing DSL and t1's for years. I would strongly recommend the Acterna, JDSU hst-3000 with the copper test package and the t1/pri package. The copper test package has a TDR and DSL test set included and the t1 package is used to test the signal on any t1 connected to the network. There are other modules that can be purcased that work with it and it can be very expensive. Otherwise take a look at SUNRISE industries sunset with dsl and t1 options.

Sorry....I would do a search for Sunrise on Ebay as dms500 mentioned the brand. They make a good unit. Make sure all associated cables/adapters/power supplies are included.
