Testing a website

After my trials with sizing page contents I am finally with a half decent web in FP, complete with hyperlinks and even a form (This is my first complete project). Before it is published to the internet, I would like to test it. Can you run over the things I must do to check the integrity of my web before making it available to the public?

Make sure you have given each page a doctype and that it validates:

As a beginner I am a bit in the dark. Can you tell me what a doctype is and how I would implement it?

Another thing I find very helpful, especially with a very content heavy site is a link checker. Do a Google search on Xenu Link Sleuth as one to look at...
