Hi,
has anybody encounterd that the SW TestAOL7Extract tries to install, without beeing started by a user or the admin?

On startup it comes up with an error message

dartftp.dll not properly registered

1. The try is dependent to the one user which obviously was active, when this software enterd the PC.
2. searches in the registry and on the system for
AOL did not show any result.
3. Virus check with Symantec (updated) virus scan is negativ;
the same holds for PESTPATROL, giving no pest results.
4. I asked AOL about this procedure, but they answered, that this software is unknown to them.

Has anybody an idea, how I could find out, what is the name of the procedure, which wants to start, and
which part of my system tries to launch the procedure?
Thaks for your help

Happy New Year

Dieter

A (pirate) program running at startup seems to generate the error. Run regedit and go to
H_L_M\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and RunOnce and a similar key in Hkey_Current_User. To identify the program, compare the entries with those for other users.
If you prefer to control the startup procedure from a simple program, see thread616-406362.

Hi PAndersen,
Happy New Year to you and the group!

Thanks for your helpful fast reply;

I followed your advice and scanned the registry.
In doing that I found by chance a key mlin
which belongs to the software Audiogalaxy Satellite
which I had deinstalled a few month ago, also deleting the complete program folder for that software;
obviously this software had not cleaned the registry; so I decided to delete the key (which exists twice in HKcurrent_user and HKUser); I exported it (you never know :)) and deleted it.

restarting the system and surprise surprise, the startup error had gone!!

But then, I imported the key again, to check whether it was really the reason for the startup error!
But the error did not show up again!
So I think the deleted key and the error are not correlated.
But perhaps there has been something wrong with the registry, which has been "repaired" by the process of deleting.
So I still do not know what has happened!

Thanks a lot again for your help

Dieter

Hi Dieter,
This program is somehow linked to MicroSoft OUTLOOK on my system. It launches everytime OL starts up and returns with error 75 - path not found. This is only a recent development. A search on the whole system for TestAOL7Extract returns empty and the likelihood is that it some sort of viral infection looking to propagate itself through AOL7 using the mailing list that it could not find because I do not have AOL7 on my system.

Any further developments on your System?

I am also getting this error, but it only occures on the first launch of Outlook after a reboot...very anoying. This error first occured after I upgraded from Office 2000 to Office XP

Had the same prob on a win98 machine i was fixing...
traced svrhost.dll to c:\windows\shelltray and found a big suprise!!! There were about 10 folders in this location that contained screenshots of this user's desktop while she was chatting on yahoo messenger and aim. Also found text docs (3xx extensions) of all her instant msgs and docs listing way too much sys info (file paths, ip addys, etc).
Company that writes software is Dart ( but their software is so flexible, its apparently easily converted to "viral" apps...LOOK OUT!
