Test a cell if it contains a formula?

Is there a way to automatically test cells in a column to see if they have a formula in them (i.e. Sum()). I would like to test each cell in a column and if they don't have a formula I would like to over-write the cell's value and put in a formula, otherwise I would like to preserve the formula that is already in there. I would like to preserve the original format of the sheet so i don't want to do anything like subtotals etc. Is this possible?
