Hello, I dont understand how to make my client PC print off our database through terminal services?

I have put on her profile connect client printers at logon, but she still cant, shes in Germany Im in the UK.

How can I do this? she is connected via VPN, and everything else works great....I really need her to print to her local printer, I do remember seeing a log on the server about a printer driver not being installed? why would I need the server to have her printer driver?

Its win2K server(DC)....

I cant get the drivers for the printer anyway!!

Its a Lexmark X6100

i appreciate any bodys help....Thanks

In order to print through TS, the print driver has to reside on the server.

Why can't you install the print driver on the server?

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Because A) I cant find the driver anywhere!
and B) I have no idea where to put the driver!

Thankyou

I read the microsoft article on TS Printing, it said you must install the driver manually! great....HOW? and where can I get the driver....

I am assuming this is a client vpn to the server not a network to network VPN. With a network to network VPN, installing a print server remotely is the ideal way. That way the printer is permanently installed on the Terminal Server. The problem you are having is that you are trying to map to the local port of the remote machine. This is possible but you need to have the drivers of printer installed on the terminal server, so that the terminal server can install the printer. Basic printers like for example an HP4 laser would have hooked right up for you because windows2000 has the drivers pre-loaded already.
If you see the error in the event viewer stating that the driver not being installed is telling you at least that you have everything else configured to allow the local printer mapping for the client and the server can see the printer port on the remote machine.

In the event viewer the server will state the exact printer it is trying to install, you must obtain those exact drivers and load them on the server. With certain printers like lexmark, you may have better luck installing the entire suite from the lexmark setup as a local printer. The drivers for that printer have to be out there or have the client obtain the drivers and get them to you. Without the drivers you will not be able to do anything for her.
A lexmark 6100 is a all-in-one printer and can be a real pain when trying to utilize the 2000 Terminal Server local printer mapping feature. The simpler the printer the better for my clients using this. Good luck

Good luck

And as far as where you would put the drivers in manually, In printers window, click file, server properties and drivers. This is where you could put the exact driver file that the server is requesting.

Thankyou for your speedy response...Im going to give it a go...now

If I cant find the Printer Driver, Where would the driver be on the client machine?

She has windows ME? C:\windows\system\drivers?

Thanks again

I wouldn't matter anyways, she has an ME driver. If she has the Install CD that would be best. You can obtain the drivers from there.

Which ones the driver??? Theres hundreds of them???

I have access to the disk....

Thanks

OK, Do I need to install the printer? Cant I just put the driver in there?

Which file is the driver?

I have the .exe install program, but I dont want to install it as the client wont be connected when I do the install.

Does anyone know how I can do this? DO I install the ME drivers? or the 2000 drivers? (If anyone can find these drivers on the net, please let me know)

Thankyou very much...

Is there a "2000" folder on the Cd? if you can access it just copy it first to your terminal server. Or if possible, copy the whole CD and run the setup.exe. You then can install the printer locally on your terminal server. You need the 2000 drivers. The client O/S doesn't matter at all with this. When picking the drivers chose the model that best matches the model that the event viewer was refering to.

There is no windows 2000 folder, only 9x or xp....Ill double check though...

Thanks,

If there is, if I run the setup.exe , wont it look for the printer? the printer wont be there, as the remote client, will not be connected when I install?
