Quick Question:

We have a domain controller set up with xp pro workstations and have all the appropriate licensing for this. We have software from vendors that we would like to use but seems redundant to put this same software on so many machines. Would I have to get additional licenses for the microsoft portion if i wanted to set up Terminal Service as an application server for vendor software which does not require additional licenses to run?

Bill

You need to set up Terminal Services in "Application Mode" and purchase the appropriate licenses.

If you'll never have more than 2 concurrent users, you might be able to get away with setting TS in "Admin mode", but I'm not sure of this by any means. Might be worth a test.

If you have W2K Server and XP Pro/W2K Pro workstations, you don't need TS licenses. If you have W2K3 Server(s), then you have to get TS licenses regarless of client OS.

By appropriate Lisences do you mean for the applications that will be shared? Or are there special lisences for using Terminal Services period? The apps that will be shared are just from our vendors and do not need licensing themselves...

Bill

Just install the app. on the terminal with one license and purchase the appropriate # of license for the the clients that need to log onto TS.

And again, I reiterate, if you have Windows 2000 Servers running Terminal Services in application mode, and the clients connecting to this server are Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP Pro systems, you do not need to throw money away on unnecessary Terminal Service client access licenses.

If you don't want to believe me, that's fine, read here, then throw away your money regardless if you want.
