We installed Terminal Services in Application Server Mode on a Member Server approximately 1 month ago and have been using it with no problems. We have between 5 & 8 users connecting from Windows XP machines at 3 other offices.

I find the licensing documentation confusing and have some questions:

1. Do I have 30 days to install Terminal Services Licensing & what happens if I don't?
2. Can I install Licensing on the same Member Server Terminals Services is on or should I install on my DC? Can I install on an XP PC in the LAN?
3. If I have 1 User who connects from 1 of 2 XP machines, do I need 1 license or 2 licenses?

1. It will stop working after that time.
2. Yes you can install the licensing on the server. That is the way that we run it.
3.TS Licensing is per connection, so if said user connects from two computers at different times 1 license would be needed.

Hope that helps.

1. It MIGHT stop working at that time. We did the same thing and never got around to installing TS licensing, but I found that PCs that were able to connect to the TS during the 30-day grace period didn't have problems connecting after the grace period ended. However, when I tried to connect a new PC to teh TS it wouldn't connect. Installing TS Licensing resolved it.

2. You can only install TS licensing on a server.

3. If the user is connecting with XP Pro (but not XP Home) then you don't need to buy any licenses. Windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP Pro already include TS licenses, so even though you install and activate TS Licensing, you won't have to buy licenses if you only use Windows 2000 and XP Pro. You won't have to add anything under TS Licensing either, the TS Licensing server sees that it is 2000/XP Pro and automatically grants it a license. Keep in mind that this is only true of Windows 2000 terminal servers, not Windows 2003 terminal servers.
