I am curious how can I set up what printers are available to someone via terminal server as well as other applications in the terminal session?

Also, I saw someone was able to connect using terminal server 2003 to a remote location and print to his local printer? How can that be if he is remoted in to a remote server? How can I set this up? Any info would be a great help. Thank you.

start mstsc.exe, go to options, local resources

That is kind of what I am looking for, to make other things available to users from the terminal server. I am also including applications. I gave printers as an example. I am looking for to configure it on the terminal server. Thanks.

What do you mean by "applications"? Can you give some more examples of what you are trying to accomplish?

Thanks,
Andrew

Making an application like Office available to everyone or adobe or something like that.

Available how? You need to give some more details about exactly what you want the user to experience so you can get responses. So far your questions have been vague.

Do you mean that when people log into a server via remote desktop, you want applications available to them? Or something else?

Thanks,
Andrew

I am sorry I did not realize there were so many possibilities. Yes, they are using RDP into the server and I want them to have those applications available. Thanks.

All you need to do is install the applications you want on the server and put shortcuts in the appropriate profiles.

First, though, you need to find out if the apps are supported in Terminal Services.

Thanks,
Andrew

How would it work for making printers available? Can I just add printers that are avilable on the server or how does that work?

Also, I saw someone print to a local printer when remoted in via RDP, how can he do that? I would not know how to set that up at all. Thanks.

Local Printer and Drive mapping is turned on or off in the RDP client. See Lemon13's post above to see where.

You can prevent users from mapping local devices (printers, drives, audio, etc) on the server here:

Control Panel...Administrative Tools...Terminal Services Configuration

In "Connections" on the left, double-click Microsoft RDP on the right, then go to the Client Settings tab.

If you are using citrix, you'll see two entries on the right...Microsoft RDP and Citrix ICA, allowing you to have two sets of settings, depending on the protocol used to connect.

Thanks,
Andrew

Can I ask one more thing related to this. Where can I learn more of these things? Would any Windows Server book have all this information or is there a specific course I should take or the labs or Microsoft's site? Any help would be great. Thanks.

From my experience, the best ways to learn are to have a test system to play with, and using the internet (google and forums are valuable tools).

Most of the questions you would have as a new network/server admin have been asked before, so usually you can find the answers online.

I don't buy books very often, simply because I tend not to read them, though ithers may disagree.

Thanks,
Andrew
