Hi,

We had a Windows 2000 AD domain which was recently upgraded to Windows 2003 AD. The problem we have run into is that there is a Windows 2000 server running Terminal Server that is looking for a non-existing license server (the old Domain Controller).

The following are the warnings when a new user, or an existing user tries to connect to the terminal server from a machine that they have never logged in to, tries to connect to the Terminal server:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: TermService
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1004
Date: 1/23/2008
Time: 4:57:02 PM
User: N/A
Computer: Terminal Server
Description:
The terminal server cannot issue a client license.

Is there any way, I can change the registry on the Windows 2000 server, to point to the new Windows 2003 DC or another Windows 2003 member server running Terminal Server licenses?

All help is sincerely appreciated.

Thanks for information. I can use this to hard code the server name, but is there a way to see what the license key is used on this server? The person before me did not leave any documentation/license information and I think I need this key to re-register the Windows 2000 terminal server license on a Windows 2003 terminal server.

Thanks in advance.

You can't use W2K TS licenses on a W2K3 TS.

There goes that idea....

So, here's a question:

Can I set up the current Windows 2000 server as the License Manager - so this way it checks itself and assigns licenses as needed. If so, how can I get the license key that I will need whilst installing Terminal server on this machine?

Thank you for helping me with this issue. It really helps to talk this out with other users.

Thanks.

If you bring back a W2K TS, then you can use your W2K CAL's. You'll have to call the Microsoft Clearing House and they'll be able to help you release and reuse your licenses.
