terminal server disconnect com port

Running an application on terminal server/citrix w2k that maps to a local com port digitizer. pcs are xp. the connection gets lost after a user does not keep the application active. it didn't do this on their 98 pcs. is there some setting in xp that causes a com port or t.s. session to disconnect?
