Hi there.

We are planning on getting a new 2008 Terminal Server, to run alongside our current 2003 model.

We have 150 CALS on the current TS, and this also runs the TS licensing.

Question is, can we utilise the current CALs we have on the new install, and how would we connect/migrate a propotion of them?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Cals are different on 2008 so you would need to buy again. They called something like remote desktop cals.

Also if you did have the cals already you would just need to point it to your TS licensing server on your 2003 server.

Thanks for the quick reply AW78!

We thought this would be the case, and you have clarified it for us. Ah well, more money to spend!

Thanks again.

Do you have an enterprise agreement? If so you can get (or may already have) eCALs, which include a TS/RDS CAL along with just about everything else that MS licesnes.

Hi kmcferrin,

Thanks for the advice - We don't have an enterprise agreement in place, unfortunately. Size of company couldn't justify it.

What we are going to do, in the interim, is use a spare 2003 license and get the new hardware setup and ready to go - We'll point this new TS to the current TS licensing to get it all running with minimal costs. It's hard to justify £39 + vat for 1 CAL, at this moment in time, so will review it at a later date. I was quite keen to start utilising some of the new 2008 features, but guess I'll have to hold fire - Thanks for all the quick advice!
