Terminal Server CAL questions

Hi,

I have four Windows 2003 servers in Terminal Server Application mode. The Terminal Server License Server, has both Temporary Licensed CALs and Per Device CALs.

I am trying to determine which CAL the Application Mode servers are using, but those servers aren't listed anywhere under "Issued To".

I don't understand how the Application Servers are working. Can anyone assist please?

The servers themselves will not grab a TSCAL. The TSCALs are taken up by the client devices that connect to the Terminal Server application servers. So if you have 4 Terminal Servers and 1 license server, until a client connects you will not consume any of your TSCAL device licenses. As clients connect to the 4 Terminal Servers, they will query the license server and give a TSCAL to the end device making the request.

Thanks for your help both.

What i'm getting confused about is this;

We use a client to connect to a Terminal Server. Then from that Terminal server we TS to another TS. Then, from that TS, we connect to many other TSs.

Am I right in thinking that each machine which is used to connect to yet another TS, hold it's own client access license (not JUST the original client I use in the first instance)??

The licenses we are using are Per Device licenses.

I am able to log in to one of our TSs when the Licensing on that TS is set to Per Device, but not when it is set to Per User. On yet another TS, the Licensing is set to Per User but I am still ABLE to log in!???

I've run the Client License Test Tool on the client (CMS1SMS03) I am using to connect to a Terminal Server. I am logged in as Administrator. This is the result: How do I know which license I am actually using!??

Any help appreciated as this makes no sense to me
