all my clients print IP to the network printers. I know TS only detects LPT, USB and COM ports. how can I make TS see the IP Printers so the clients can print to them?
TS will redirect just about any installed client printers if GP, RDP connector, and or RDP client permit it. You need to install all printer drivers on the TS or they wont redirect, if you look at the event log on the TS you may already see that printers tried to redirect but couldnt because no drivers are installed. Or you could just installed the ip printers on the TS and all the TS users should see them that way also.
A better idea would be to install all the printers on a different server than your TS and then just have your users do a search for a network printer, or have a short cut to that server's printer and faxes folder and have them choose the printer they want to use. Much easier than tring to hope that the terminal server mapps the client's local printers.
I tried to install the printer onto the TS but the problem is I get an error message saying "unable to install printer, either the printer name is typed incorrectly or the specified printer has lost connection to the server"
all I am do is installing a printer , creating a new IP port and installing the drivers...no big deal.
are you using the printer name or the printers IP address? I would assume that you are using the IP address, thus the IP printing. At what point do you recieve this error message? Sounds like you install the printer the try printing to it correct? I would verify IP address and port number about 99.999% of the time they use port 9100. Try and got to the jet admin page on the printer or go to the printer and try to set it back to default then set it back up. If it is set to the wrong port number for whatever reason could cause a problem connecting.
I am using the IP Address..I get the error right after it ask's if I want to print a test page. the IP address is correct. I can set this printer up no problem on any workstation. but when I try and set it up on a server that's when I get the error.
OOHH I did just remember something there is a setting somewhere (I would have to look it up) about not allowing Kernel Drivers to be installed. That might have something to do with it. Have you tried using a LaserJet 2100 PS driver, that is a pretty good driver to use for laserjet printers.
We use a product called Net2Printer which works great and is not very expensive. Using this software allows you to avoid installing all those annoying printer drivers.
