How come when I open my templates using NT explorer I can save them as .doc, but when I open them through Word, I am prevented from saving them as a .doc?
Its a lovely quirk of word. What it does is only allows you to save the file as a .dot (template) in the stated template directory - in older versions of word. In 97 you can choose the directory but still have to save it as a .dot.
To get around this you can do a file new (assuming that the template is in the template location - use tools, options and file locations). This will create a document version of the template that can be saved as a document.
