When opening an Indesign template, it automatically makes a copy, however when you go to save, it does not save over the copy made. So, the more you use the templates, the more copies appear. It's driving me crazy!!! Is there a preference or something somewhere that will allow you to open a template without creating a copy????

That's what a template is for. If you want to open the original, save it as a regular file.

But, if I'm totally missing something, and you have a reason for having it saved as a template, do this. Open it from the open command in ID, you'll notice at the bottom of the dialog box you have the option of 3 ways of opening it. Select "open original" and it won't make a copy.

In other programs, when you open a template, it opens a copy but after you've made changes and go to save, it saves over the copy. I have templates built for clients who print the same items again and again with different employees information on them (business cards, letterhead, etc.), but when working in InDesign, if I open directly from the template numerous copies build up. It's a mere annoyance, and doesn't sound like there's anything I can do about it. Thanks anyway!

P.S. The advice you gave about opening the template from within InDesign did work...thank you very much!
