Greetings
I converted 3 dozen templates from Quark to InDesign CS. I had a few issues with the functionality of templates. Maybe someone could help or at least explain why things happen the way they are happening.

The document is saved as an INDT from the Save As menu. When i double click the INDT it opens with "file name copy" in the same folder that the templates reside in. I then do a save as to get the template in the correct folder, but the "copy" is still in the templates designated folder. I tried changing the info of the INDT and unchecked the Stationary Pad setting. Now when I open an INDT it opens as the correct name, but it allows me to override anything I wish to the template itself.

Can I set the INDT document to open as an Untitled Document like Quark?

Could someone explain what the Stationary Pad setting is for? and the terminology behind it?

Any advise would be helpful

Thank you~

Indesign likes you to open templates in one of 2 ways, but they don't involve double clicking the template's icon.

The easiest way, for now is to use the Open command. When you select your template, make sue that Open Normal (Mac) is checked at the bottom of the Open window. Then hit the Open button and you'll get a new untitled document with the template showing.

The more advanced way, once you get used to it is to use the Template Browser (Window menu/Template browser. It not only list the things but shows you pictures of them - so you don't have to remember the name. If you open this and click the little triangle at the upper right, you get a slew of options. Photoshop CS has the same thing under File/Browse - letting you see all your pics.

You can add all your templates to the browser and select them for use when necessary. As delivered, there are a bunch of things in there that you'll probably want to ditch. You can create a new category named something like OLD QXDs and put your templates there, or create as many categories as you wish.

When you want to access a template launch ID and go to Window/Template browser. Scroll to whatever you've made and open it. You'll get a new untitled doc, based on the template to Save As.

You'll probably want to read up on the Template Browser. Just type it into ID Help search.

Stationary Pad has been in Mac OS since the beginning of time. It prevents you from making any changes to a template (or stationary). You can't save a change to an item with stationary pad checked. You can only Save As. When you unchecked Stationary pad, you made your templates fully changeable - not too good for a template. You might want to go back and recheck stationary pad. I had not noticed the automatic copy making when double clicking a INDT. I assume that's an Apple thing to protect you from losing something - kind of clever.

Jmgalvin - thank you
