All of a sudden, the tempd.mdf is growing to 17 gig, Restarted the server, and shrank. This week same thing. Why would this happen all of a sudden, and what is the best way to keep this under contol? SQL2000

Restart the SQL Server service :)
That way TempDB is recreated.

We have restarted the SQL Server twice, but can't keep doing this every ohter day, and need to know why it is continually growing so big.

Thank you

What recently changed? Sounds like you have one or more processes not working correctly or you need to keep the temp db large to handle current workload. You could have a query that is selecting a huge number of rows that someone just implemented or something that is repeating that shouldn't be.
