When i telnet to my Linux box from Win2000 it comes up with login details for root and password. When i enter it, it keeps telling me "Login incorrect". When i net view it appears on the list, but if i try net view \\ip or net view \\name i get errors.
I have read pages and pages on Linux but......

Afaik telnetting to a linuxmachine and try to login as root is not possible. Try to telnet and login as a regular user. If you want root-rights, after login use su and the root-pass. Better is to install a ssh server and a windows ssh-client because telnet is not encrypted and everything that goes over the network can be sniffed.
