I'm setting up a 3640 router using IOS 12.1 - both of which I am new to.

When connecting to it through Hyper Terminal I can configure to my hearts content - when I try to telnet the connection gets dropped after about 5 mins. I've gone through the config as it is and the command reference and I cannot find a good reason for it........can anyone enlighten me?

I presume it is some very basic setting that I am completely missing!

Thanks

the default for cisco is to timeout after 5 minutes have elapsed without receiving any command.. u need to configure your vty terminal not to timeout.. here's the command..

conf t

line con 0
password xxx
login
line aux 0
line vty 0 4
exec-timeout 0 0
password xxx
login

as u can see, the line vty 0 4 is your telnet terminal.. the exec-timeout 0 0 will enable u to stay connected to your heart's content... if u use the password xxx line, this will be the password u will need to access the router over the vty terminal....

good luck..
