Hi, hope I got the right forum here.
Here's my situation and setup.

Cable (WAN)
I
Router (using DHCP)
I
36 port Switch
I I I I I I I I I I I I I
Windows 2000 Server Winxp stations Quintum Gateways

Now because the router is using DHCP and is acting as a NAT how would someone log in to a node (Quintum Gateways) on our network via telnet.
The device we are trying to log in to is a Quintum gateway with a static IP.
What IP from the remote location will we have to connect to? The IP from our ISP? How does thaty work? There are 4 gateways we will have to do this to. All can be assighned a static IP (192.168.1.XX) but isnt that locally?
Thanks your opinions are greatly appreciated!

By far the safest way to do this would be via VPN. Traffic would be encrypted, you would be authenticated and on the lan so you could telnet using the private IP.

If you aren't worried about security, you could use port forwarding.

Thanks NtrOP, ok tell me a bit more on port forwarding if you will... Basically I want to be able to log in to the Quintum Gateway from home using telnet. the gateway is in our LAN behind a linksys router.

Thanks

With the LinkSys it is a simple matter of saying that all traffic bound for port 23 (telnet) should be sent to this public IP (IP address of the Quintum Gateway). My memory is a little hazy on where to find this in the LinkSys interface, but it is there (somewhere under the Advanced tab perhaps).

The external user would then telnet to the external IP given to you by your ISP (hopefully a static IP otherwise you will need to verify the IP everytime you do this) and the LinkSys will see that there is inbound telnet traffic and forward it to the Quintum Gateway.

thanks buddy i got it now...ill let you know if it doesnt work!
