I am having an issue with a vender that is unable to receive e-mail from us. They are running an Exchange Server and some other exotic stuff that I am not familiar with. The error message that I get when the message bounces back is:

Transcript of session follows:
Command: EHLO grpwise.aguirre.com
Response: 421 5.5.2 Syntax error (command line too long)

What the tech guy there want me to do, however, is to establish a telnet session from the Groupwise server to his and see if I can make a connection. I have never heard of doing telnet from a NW box. Is this possible?

Do a search for TEL.NLM on Google.. That's a great tool to troubleshoot this type of problem.

On the server, just type "TEL BLAHBLAH.BLAHBLAH.COM 25" If it comes back with something, you're in. If it times out, there is a problem.

cool, thanks.

As it turns out, it was an Exchange problem after all (duhh!) There is a NOOP variable that had to be increased. He set it to 38 bytes and it all started working properly.

True.. neither of us would sully the impeccible reputation of such a fine, upstanding e-mail platform such as that <gag>

BTW, the tel.nlm worked great. I was even able to see the smtp server that he wanted me to see when he was suggesting that the problem might be on my side.

If anyone wants it, you can find it here:
