I've a client who dials up to my UNIX server from the hotel with no problem. He goes home to his brand new all fiber network neighborhood and cannot keep a connection going. Randomly it just kinda freezes. His PC is a new Dell D505. I'm thinking either his provider is having issues creating an analog dial tone or his modem with digital line detect is seeing the fabricated analog dialtone as digital.
His provider supplies fiber to the home and provides TV, local and long distance, HighSpeed internet and security but there ain't no copper pair of wires and I think that's our problem. I really appreciate you reading this and providing your expertese.

Try testing one part at a time. (replace computer with another, then the modem, etc...)

Try using ping and see what the response rate is. There may be a timeout issue if it is not fast enough. Sometimes you can adjust the telnet client to allow for longer response times.

How is he getting the connection? Is this a IP Phone or what?

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Get a utility like Ping Plotter, this will generally show you where the problem is in a visual environment.

It will ping each node down the line, if a node is not repsonding it will show.

My client is in Atlanta and I'm in Charlotte, NC so the try a different PC would be kinda tough.

My client dials into my UNIX modem. I don't think it's an IP/TCP connection...is it? In either case I don't see how I can get him to run a Ping session and I certianly don't see how he could GUI a ping application. Thanks for the thaughts though.
