After installing a couple different patches on my HP-UX server I am unable to telnet from the server and to the server from a workstation. I noticed that the inetsvcs.conf file in the /etc directory was missing so I replaced it from the /usr/newconfig/etc directory and now I can telnet out from the server but I'm still unable to telnet in from any workstation. I've checked the /etc/services and /etc/hosts file. Not sure where to go from here so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Zum

Hi

It may be complete coincidence, but has your network card failed or is intermittantly failing.....check ping, lanscan output

Also check that your routing is correct (default route is setup in netstat)

Also look in the /etc/inet.conf file that telnet is not commented out. Check that inetd process is running

Also check the telnetd daemon executable located in /usr/lbin/

Here is the error I'm getting now.

telnetd: Telnet device drivers missing: No such file or directory
Local flow control off

Hi

cd /dev/pts and you should have tty files here - these are for telnet and are defined by the value of a kernel param call nstrtel.
If they are not there or if you ever increase the value of nstrtel, then an #insf -d tels will recreate them.

If this is not the case for you check also permissions on the directory structure.

Thanks for the help. Well the tty files were missing so I recreated them, but I'm still having the same problem.

There are bas Telnet patches - maybe you've installed one of them - you could try swremove'ing them.

Also found this patch, which has error that matches yours, if you are running 11.00 .....

Fix Text

fix
11 GR patch : PHNE_27788

Well the PHNE_27788 patch is not installed.
To give you a little more info on how this happened, I was trying to upgrade to operating system from 10.20 to 11.0. Now after reading more I've learned that it isnt recommended to upgrade, but to rather do a cold install.

No, sorry my post was misleading....PHNE_27788 is a fix for that error message.

You are right thought, I have seen all transitions to 11.00 with a cold install.

Good luck
Clare

Hi Unixqueen,

The posting on hp was on linux platform and with firewall. Thus may be the same as my problem. THanks for your help anyway.

Sorry it should be. The link will not be any help to my problem. As they are of different platform.

Can an HP k220 server run 11.0 operating system?

zum, look in /etc/.supported_bits for your model number. Next to it will be either 32bit, 64bit or 32/64. You can install 11.0, but only in the allowed bit mode.

Thanks for all the help. I found that the telnetm file was missing. Once I recreated it I was able to telnet into the server.

Thanks again for everyones help.
