I just installed RedHat 8.0 on a dell 1400sc. The install went fine up until now. Clients on the local network cannot telnet to the server. I can telnet out but not in. The things I have checked are as follows:

/etc/host.allow is open to all local
/etc/host.deny is blank
I can ping all the servers anywhere on the local network.
I have ensured my iptables is open to port 23
/etc/xinetd.d has telnetd in it
/etc/xinetd.conf has the directory above included

If i do a netstat -plant it does not show port 23 listening
I have ensured telnetd is set to enalbe
I have ensured the telentd rpm package is installed.
If I try to telnet to localhost is fails.

The message I am getting is connection refused. This set off a flag telling me that this is a the firewall stopping it, or a telnetd problem. I am at my witts end. Thanks for any help

It means that telnetd is probably not running.
Have you just issued the command telnetd
and tried to run the server standalone?

It sounds like an xinetd problem.
Likely a misconfiguration or possibly you just need to send sigusr 1 to xinetd so it will reread it's config.

I reinstalled Redhat and everything works perferct. Thanks for your advice.

Whoa.
That's a really bad solution IMHO.
Linux is not windows, where registry corruption can cause you to want to
reinstall. All the problems in linux, with very few exceptions, can be fixed with
the system intact and running.

Definitely not a solution, more of
throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

This problem would have been with the firewall configuration. If you had selected any firewall then it prohibits telenet and ftp.or telnet server might not be started also..
That could have been checked out..its rediculous to reinstall linux for such things..
:-(

I appreciate everyones concern about me reinstalling linux, but the reason I did the reinstall had nothing to do with the telent connection. And the firewall setting were set to allow port 23 to allow incoming and outgoin. The telnet service was started and was running. I did get the telnet to work before I reinstalled linux.
