Sorry ,but I'm an absolute newbie in Linux
I've set up SuSE Linux 6.0

I tried to telnet to the Linux machine, tried to log on as root but it doesn't work...
HOwever I can log on to the server as root...

Where can I set these telnet permissions ?

Thanks

You're problem could be in a system configuration file.

There is a file etc/rc.config, and one of the entry's in this file is:
ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE= and then either yes or no, you should set this to yes. Now you're able to login via telnet

This should do the trick...
Hope it helps
Good luck..

is there a way I specify which users can telnet to the server ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Do yourself a HUGE favor...

1) Disable telnet
2) If you MUST run it, NEVER let root access via telnet

Telnet is an unencrypted protocol, so your passwords are sent over the network in clear text ... BAD

All modern linux distro's have ssh packages... use SSH instead (SecureSHell)

I need telnet because I have barcode readers that are using a script on the linux server... so when a user logs in, his .profile loads a script...
The barcode only supports telnet, so...
but yes, I agree when you state that I should ssh... it's much safer ---------------------------------------------------------------------
