Using hyperterminal I can dial to a remote system hearing the dial tone and hand shake of the modems. When I dial using dial-up networking I hear nothing and after a minute I get a message saying there was no answer. Shouldn't I at least get a message like no dial tone if I hear no activity through the modem?

No answer means no answer, not "no dial tone".
If modem sound properties are turned off, you won't necessarily hear anything, even after a successful connect. Cheers,

try the following in no specific order:

make sure the correct modem is selected for that connection

delete the connection and add it again

make sure the connection is dailing the number correctly and all network settings are correct. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

I deleted the connection and re-added it. Modem is selected and network settings are correct. I am wondering about 2 things. First does DUN hand it's data off to hyperterminal for dialing? Second I am using the telephony properties for area code and (1) for long distance This does not show in the phone number preview window nor when dialing just the seven digit number XXX-XXXX.

Thanks for your help.

try dailing out through DUN that way you can see the number before you dail.

DUN has nothing to do with hyperterminal. they use different protocols and different connections all together. you can always reinstall DUN if you need to. just go to ADD/REM progs. and then check the communications that you have installed. you can do it all from there. we can give more info on that if you need. MAKE SURE TO HAVE YOUR WINDOWS CD!!!

also, does the remote machine support RAS and PPP connections? "Jack of all trades. Master of none."
