First - I do have problems connecting to my service if my telephone device is connected - I can connect immediately with it disconnected (voltage problem?). With the telephone device connected I do get disconnected from the net (while browsing) almost always within a half an hour but can remain connected for up to an hour when playing a game (Freelancer). With the telephone device disconnected I can remain connected to the net (while browsing) indefinitely - i.e. NO disconnect - and I get my best downtimes. However, when I go to play my game I get disconnected after only ten minutes or so. I have tried many 'keep-me-connected' programs and I can verify that my connection is NOT idle. I also use NetMedic and it keeps telling me that my ISP requested to be disconnected. I have e-mailed the ISP's hostmaster in relation to this and he basically snubbed me so if anyone can offer ANY suggestions as to what might be going on here I would be very grateful indeed.

no, it's a jWin residential wall handset - a completeley ordinary phone. I dunno what the hell's going on??????

I got an OLD analogue telephone out (of my Grandmothers attic (true!)), one with a dial, and have been using that for the last two days and I haven't had any problems. Can anyone understand what exactly is going on here? I would really like to know. Would it have anything got to do with tone/pulse settings? Would dialing up with pulse settings affect transmission and if so - how?

thedaver - your tip is appreciated but is a get-around rather than a solution. If i knew exactly what was happening then I could really put the squeeze on my ISP's hostmaster (if it is THEY who are at fault) to put things right.

If I'm not mistaken(lamently speaking on MY part)

rotary=pulse

Well, I was thinking digital=tone, but analog/digital cellphones ...hmmm?

I vaguely remember reading once that pulse is "after-the-fact" number dial and tone is "on-demand" number dialing. Which would make sense when you consider that a rotary phone has to come back to number dialed before it 'locks' in. But some countries are still strictly 'pulse' dialing. So would this insure 10 and 12 number dialing? NOT!

A BellSouth wallphone I had once had to be unplugged from the back of my computer and plugged in with a 'splitter' from the wall?!

no bud! no call waiting, no ex-directory - just the bare line. I am stumped but not completely. I am sure it is my ISP who is at fault because when I dial-up a different ISP I don't have any problems at all. So the fact that the old rotary phone is making good my connections to my subscribed ISP tells me that their server setup is the problem. I might add that this is a new server setup they have installed to cater for this new flat-rate package they've just released. It is a dedicated phone number I ring. I reckon they botched the job somewhat because there was a big rush to get the 'flat-rate' ball rolling here (Ireland)when the licensing came through. There are two main providers (Eircom & EsatBT) and they are always, well, do I need to get into it? No, I don't think so. Suffice to say that there was a 'big rush'. :( Ok, they are probably still ironing out the bugs, but they are telling me that it is *I* that has the problem and that just won't do! No no no. Certainly not! My machine is tip top - I know it is - I run a bug-free system. I hate bugs! I've got a nice load of maintenance utilities and I use them regularly. As soon as a bug develops it is tracked down and eliminated. That's ME. What about their "professional staff" then? Do they not take care to track down THEIR bugs? This annoys me greatly. What kind of standards must we endure? Pretty low if we are not to provide for ourselves I think. Bah! I'm in a bad mood now just thinking about this crap! Thanks for the help guys. Appreciated much!
