Telecommuting with VPN

Hi. I am VERY new to VPN and networking concepts completely. I am going to start telecommuting at work and was told that the best way to connect to our network is by using VPN.

My laptop that I will be using at home is running Windows XP Professional. The server at work that I want to connect to is running Windows Small Business Server and acts as our file server and MS Exchange mail server.

I would really appreciate if someone could help me out and give me the basics about what I would need to make this work.
