Not sure where to get a good estimate of my worth.

I've been a telecom analyst/ tech for about 7 years, I have some fair knowledge in Nortel Meridian, Aspect ACD and Avaya Definity.

I'm not an expert in each of the systems but can perform MAC's and lower level call routing in Aspect & Avaya. I'm familiar with T1's and have a BS in Telecom management.

Right now I'm getting 45k :( because my current employer hired me with no experience on the Avaya system.

I work in Southern Cali.

How much am I worth?

Try sites like salary.com. This will give you a general idea (low, median, high) salary range. This is not set in stone and you shouldn't wave it at your employer saying you need to pay me this.. Use it as a tool/guide for your next review and say well I have talked to other techs around her and they are getting paid x. Expect most employers to pay between the low and median ranges.

The Telecom field is undergoing a radical change.[cry] TDM is starting a slow decline while VOIP is on the rise. Technicians who can install, program and support the next generation of telephone gear (pure IP and hybrid) will be needed.

I am a 30 year veteran of the Telco industry. I have system and networking certifications and work on everything from PBX, Key, DSL, T1, VoIP, LAN and I am called on a regular basis to provide support for programming or networking in a five state region and I am on call 24/7.

My boss thinks I'm a lazy bum and that I would be overpaid at $5 per hour.

I think I'm a f**king genius and I would be underpaid at $200 per hour, mush less the pittance I actually make.

Worth is relative...

7 years in the same career I think you should have become an expert in some things and maybe get a few raises along the way? For lower level MACD's I think $45k is appropriate. For a 7 year expert, double it. $45k for a college graduate after 7 years on the job? I don't get how you make a living in Southern California on that.

I've got the same confidence as Crowtalks, can't put a dollar amount on our worth, but hey we gotta eat right?
