technique to make photos look painted 1

Hi there,

Sorry for the newbie questions, I am trying to make my own wedding invitaions, and was inspired by the old travel postcards:

I am working on the letter pathways in illustrator, and want to do each letter as a clipping mask - want to take photos that we have from around the state and make them look like vintage painted images. Any advice on a good technique for this? I have photoshop cs2 and have tried some filters, cutout and some of the paint-like ones, but am not happy so far.
