Just read on CNET that the Technet subscription service will be ending. Sad to see it go, so now I have to decide if I want to renew my sub. for one last year. Renewals through 8/31/13. Go here to read more about it.

Sounds like the end of the almost free ride on MS software.

You just explained why they are killling it off. They are fed up with what should be test / demo software going into production.

We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.

It should be a no-brainer to anyone why they killed it off. First "Windows Secrets" Magazine (electronic) posts about the (at the time) ability to activate up to 10 copies (each) of up to 10 separate licenses of each MS program (total 100 copies each) then to quell that free fountain MS reduces it to 2 activations of 2 licenses each (4 total activations) per program and raises the cost of a subscription (slightly). Then you go to pirate sites and find Technet licenses posted there along with instructions on how to call in and reset the activation limit after it's been exhausted. While unfortunate for the truly legitimate users, the shutdown and change in policy should come as no surprise.

Maybe MSDN Subscription is taking over, or picking up the slack, from TechNet?

I think the focus is switching to the (free) TechNet Evaluation Center
