I have solaris 8 server and downloaded tcpd package from sunfreeware. To enable logging I changed syslog.conf.

daemon.info /var/log/syslog

The syslog file is present. When I turn on syslogd debugging, I get the message

logerror(1): syslogd: /var/log/syslog : No such file or directory

Why does it not think the file is there.

The reason I am doing this is I installed tcpd and the readme says that by default tcpd logs to maillog "By default, the wrapper logs go to the same place as the transaction logs of the sendmail daemon. The disposition can be changed by editing the Makefile and/or the syslog.conf file. " I know that I can compile tcpd but I thought I could just change syslog, which I did.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Are there tabs or spaces between "daemon.info" and "/var/log/syslog"? syslog is very fussy and you must only use tabs in syslog.conf.
