we are at present on a class C subnet and am changing to a class A subnet.

not so much worried about desktops as they are all on DHCP. it is the server with virtual ip's in IIS SQL databases, PDC's, BDC's that I am worried about.

Does anybody know of any tools available as a check list or crib sheet so that we don't leave anything out.

I have had a look at cisco and microsft knowledge base but can't find anything that really meets what I need.

Thanks very much

Who is working out the addressing scheme? How many machines are you talking about?

As a word of advice I would get a spreadsheet going with a list of current IP's and replacement IP's, work from that sheet and your current address range should be transferred ok.

You haven't said whether this is a corporate LAN\WAN infrastructure or purely one site, assuming that it's a corporate change then you should have help from the person who designed the new addressing scheme.

If you have any questions please ask.

thanks very much for you points.

It's one site corporate LAN I have a system admin software that picks up all IP's, I have made a note of all virtual IP's used by webservices, database services etc. We have 200 desktops and around 30 servers with 50 odd static ip's.

I am just wondering whether we build a pdc plus dhcp/dns server/s in the new range and then one by one move the servers over, and then release and renew all desktops, which are on DHCP. Or whether we need to make all machines dhcp, take them off the present subnet, then rejoin them to the new one still using DHCP (including servers) and then give the appropriate boxe's static ip's.

a third point is about printers. presumably we are going to have to reinstall all the printers on the print server as they use standard hp IP ports.

thanks for any advice

Guy,

If you're on one physical site then it would make more sense to just add a new range to create a superscope (combining two different IP addresse ranges to one scope). It would then mean you don't need to change all the printers and servers ip addresses. A far easier and less stressful solution.

I would also look at why you need a new range? is it because you have more computers\users or because the lease period is too long?
