Hello,

At work we have 10 computers on a switch, running win98, nt4, 2000 and a nt4 server. The network has been working fine, until last thursday, when one computer couldn't access the network at all. The next day about 5 computers could not access the network. When I installed Netbeui they could share resources, so I know the hardwre is working coreectly. The first computer to have this problem had an error with its virus scan 3 months or so ago, and every time we tried to install an update but that didnt work (McAfee), when I uninstalled that and installed norton 2001 it would lock the computer up, although it worked fine on a identical (Hardware and OS Wise) computer. We have virus scanned most of the computers that arent working on the network and the server and have found no virus. If anyone knows what this might be or how to fix it please reply to this post.

Thanks,

Justin Wood

Hi Justin,
A couple of questions, if you could clarify...
1) What type switch are you using?
2) Are you using IP or Netbios?
2a) if you're using IP are you assigning addresses statically or via DHCP?
3) Are you seeing any error messages at boot up?

Cheers
Phil.

We have a office connect 3 com 16 port 10/100 auto-sensing switch. We have a linksys 1 Port router which is serving up our dynamic IP's. Before this happened we were solely using TCP/IP. Currently we started using netbeui to share services between computers. The only error on boot up is the cannot find dhcp server etc, etc.

Thanks a lot,

Justin Wood

Hi,
Make sure that the switch ports that connect to the PC's / servers are not running spanning-tree or that they are running a fast version (Cisco call it portfast - but im not sure about 3-com).
Spanning tree takes a while to start forwarding packets while it's learning the network - for single end nodes it's not required.
I guess you're using Netbios over TCP/IP, so once you get a DHCP response you'll start connecting to the server again.

All the best.
Phil.
