TCP/IP problem dialup on ADSL router

My setup Desktop xp pro with dialup access thru PCI 56k modem. ICS enabled on desktop. 3Com3C900Combo 10/100 NIC with network cable going to 4 port Billion 5100W ADSL Modem/router. No ADSL or phone line connected.

Laptop 802.11b PCMCIA Nic card networked to desktop

Can surf the net on both machines, each can ping each other and each can ping the router.

Everythings OK till I disconnect from the net. When I dialup again, the whole setup is no good due to (I think) a new IP address being assigned to me by my dialup providor.

The Billion router has an option to disable DHCP which I think is the cause of the screw up when I try to redial in to my provider, so was needing to know what to put in the manual settings for dialup on the router setup page. A Dummy HTML version can be found here:
(Not mine :))

My IP numbers always fall in this range

Server IP 203.24.***.** Last numbers vary on each connection
Client IP 203.91.**.***

Can anyone help me set up my Billion for dialup that will work each time I dial in, without getting TCP/IP error messages causing me not to get connected. There seems to be many options if you start the setup wizard. I will be getting ADSL soon, but not 4 another 6 months :-(

Many thanks Chris

Unless your ISP will give you a static IP (which I doubt), you're stuck on that point.

Sounds like you're using the ADSL router as a switch???

My advice is to disable DHCP on the ADSL router, put static IP's (perhaps 192.168.1.x)on the 'inside' nic of the dialup machine and the second machine.

See if that helps.

Thanks for your help people. Well I end up getting it sorted with the help of your posts. I also had another issue that was complicating the process. The laptop had a TCP/IP stack problem, in that it was corrupted, so had to be rebuilt, as I couldnt get 1 PC to see the other one way, but not the other.

In all a drama but got it all sorted in the end.

Warmest regards, Chris
