based on all of the posts i've read...i guess my tcp/ip stack became corrupt after running SpyBot to clean up a bunch of adware...shortly after rebooting i kept losing the ability to get to websites (from any browser IE, Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape) and my mail popserver...my IM still works...but nothing else

-i've run the drtcp and changed the MTU to 1492
-winsock stack repair (netsh winsock reset catalog)
-run WinsockXPFix.exe
-uninstalled and resinstalled all of my networking options
-done everything on FAQ779-4625

nothing has worked...nothing has worked...i'm desperate...i'm about to throw myself out the window

Step 1: Delete the corrupted registry keys
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, locate the following keys, right-click each key, and then click Delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Note Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so causes the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for those two keys. If you do not restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP
1. Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
2. Click Install.
3. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
4. Click Have Disk.
5. Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
6. On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
7. Restart the computer.

Finish the job for XP Service Pack 2 users

Start, Run, CMD
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot

Do you have any type of firewall or privacy software installed (Ex. McAfee Privacy manager)?

Since you suggested that have running SpyBot gave you the problem, why not run The restore from Spybot and return to your orignal settings.

Okay, I am having the dreaded 169 problem. I have been to the old thread "how to start dhcp yadda yadda" and tried most, if not all, of the stuff on that thread. My wireless card works fine, but my network card does not. Here is what I remember trying:
1. winsock fix
2. windows xp cd repair
3. winsock registry deletion, then tcp/ip install, then the netsh stuff (on the "netsh winsock reset catalog" one, I got a message saying the following command was not found)
4. stopping and restarting the dhcp scripting in services
5. uninstall/reinstalling the network card device and drivers
6. pleading with my computer

I think I've tried more, but I can't remember what all. Any suggestions? I wanted to try deleting the winsock registry items and using the update function of my xp restoration cd, but my cd can't find it on itself.

Also, I should note that the network card works fine off of my school network, so it could be a problem with the computer center, but they think it is with my computer.
