Ok, here is my delema, I started at this company a little while ago, and they have a mix of NetBeui and TCPIP running here. Let me backtrack a little, before I arrived they were running primerily TCPIP, but if they could not get a connection to a computer they would just add NetBeui to the mix. I have always built larger networks (like this one) 50+ computers with TCPIP only, and they seem to have worked great. Would the combination of using only TCP/IP and a mix of TCP/IP cause some problems, on our network, (switches and hubs). especially with some SQL connectivity.

Thanks..
Chris.

SQL needs IP.

Ditch NetBEUI and go fully IP. It'll speed up the network too. Drop a DHCP server in somewhere and its almost a no brainer.

Hi,

It all depends on how the relevant applications in use are written or configured. I once had an instance where a sybase (sql) server was configured only for netbeui so it can happen. In theory if you have both protocols installed you can't go wrong. Netbeui is not routable so has obvious limitations. However, when you have both that and tcp/ip a hybrid called by M$ 'nbt'
(netbios over tcp) is used to provide a routable version of netbios. You may find you can get away without netbeui but, as I say, it all depends if something somewhere only recognises that protocol. Having said that, if at all possible I would drop the netbeui - try to track down what still needs it.

Regards
