Hi all,

need some advice with server 2008. Basically i'm trying to setup a demo VoIP system with SIP handsets. Anyway i have a netgear switch with a 2008 R2 server insatlled. DHCP from 2003 DC. The 2008 server is able to ping all lan devices bar this SIP phone.

From other servers i.e. 2003 i am able to ping the SIP phone

from the 2003 servers i'm able to ping the 2008 server.

Hence somehting is blocking the ping to and from the 2008 box to the SIP handset. any ideas? Swiches are fine none managged, must be somew setting in server 2008

I read through your post a few times, just to be sure - but it still sounds like a network problem.

Here are some ideas - remember, I have no idea what your network looks like:

* Isolate the SIP issue - Make sure your SIP phone is updated to the latest firmware. With so many different devices on the market, it's hard to keep up with bug fixes. You may be able to configure the phone to pull a file directly from the manufacturer's website.

* Isolate the switch issue - Get a basic switch (4-port Linksys in the clearance aisle at Best Buy is fine). Connect the server, your SIP phone, and the main switch to your little switch, so you can still pull network services from the DC, but the hop is as short as possible between Server 2008 and the SIP phone.

* Be sure the Server 2008 firewall is DISABLED. SIP uses port 5060, and ping uses ICMP packets; either can be blocked by the firewall.

* Isolate the server issue - Get a cheap USB to Ethernet adapter, and use that connection to test your ping responses. If it's successful, you have a network card issue.

* The most important one of all - Unless you are planning on using Office Communication Server, use a Linux distro for VoIP. Trixbox, PBX in a Flash, and Elastix are some of the free, open-source, company-backed VoIP solutions that are out there, and all have a customized ISO to burn and install.

Hope that points you in the right direction...
