TCP/IP & DNS issue

Very weird issue here. This is a laptop that was upgraded from Win NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 SP3. When the laptop dials out (it's using a pc card modem for remote access) to our iPass service it connects just fine, yet when you go to pull up IE to test the connection it gives a DNS error (cannot find server). I've also noticed that pinging 127.0.0.1 times out as does pinging the actual address. Interestingly enough, nslookup works and I am able to do DNS queries to my nameservers command line. When the vpn client on the machine is active, IE will work for the intranet website only.

Things I've tried:

- Removed and reinstalled IE 6.0 SP1
- Removed TCP/IP TWICE and reinstalled clean (cleaned registry keys)
- Removed the iPass software, cleaned the registry of its existence and reinstalled it.
- Disabled the firewall software (it has NIS on it) and it still does it.
- Disable VPN client services and still does it.

Modem is brand new so I do not think it could be an issue with that and I have already checked the cabling.

Anyone?

I would suspect the upgrade... Wipe it and do a clean install.

Or, try the new hardware in a different laptop.. .Does it work there?

i wish i could wipe it and start over. it's already configured for everything the user needs it for. So basically, if i tell him I have to wipe it and start over he might not be too receptive of that.

I suggest you have a talk with iPass first, since you connect to them, maybe they have had this before. If the solution is here, let us know it was helpful so others can benefit from it as too
