In Sales Transaction Entry, is there a way to tax the quantity of an item sold instead of the total price. Our company sells fuel and taxes are applied to the amount of gallons sold not the price. So far I haven't found a solution to this in the documentation or Customer Source. We're using 8.0. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you tax a specific amount per gallon, you can setup a tax detail and choose the Based On to be "Flat Amount per Unit."

Flat Amount per Unit

Calculates the amount of tax per unit sold or purchased, for example, a gasoline tax of $0.17 per gallon.

I had tried that, but the system charged $0.17 for the total taxes when it should have been $170.00 for 1000 gallons. I've had a lot of problems with calculating rates, so I guess we'll have to stick to manual for now. Thanks for the help.

You might want to check out the Utility Billing package from Diamond Software. I've used it for electric, watever, and sewage. I had a Power Cost Equalization (PCE) item for electric. The PCE is a state subisdy so it's a discount on some customer's bills. It's based on the number of Kilowats of another item-electric. The software lets you set it up as a positive or negative and based on another item. You can also put in more complicated price breaks then GP allows.

I think they even have something for altitude for gas or something. It has it's own cash receipts though so I'm not sure if that would be an issue. Anyway, for utility billing it's worth checking it.
