I have set up two linked tasks with a 'finish to start' dependency, but the second task does not move to the end of the first one, they both still show as starting on the same day.

This seems to be the default in my copy of Project - not just one particular file - and I can't recreate the problem on another guy's copy of Project.

There are no other settings/preference I can find that refer to this - any ideas anyone??

I should add that Lag shows as 0 days, so it's not that....

It is easy to recreate the problem:

1. Create task1 with start date today and duration of 5 days.
2. Create task2 with start date today and duration of 5 days.
3. Double click on task2, click on the Advanced tab, give Task2 a constraint type of "Must Start On", click on OK.
4. Set up the task1-task2 FS dependency.

If you feel that this does not accurately describe your situation then open your project, double-click on task1 and note all information in all tabs and do the same for task2. Post your information.

And, please, people: tell us the release and version of Project you are using.

If you do the above, the Planning Wizard brings up the *&*$*ing paperclip highlighting that there's a scheduling conflict. If you OK this message, then the Gantt chart looks the same as the problem one.

However, my one does this WITHOUT DEFINING ANY CONSTRAINTS - ie by default for ANY tasks in ANY project.

Oh, and I'm using Project 98 SR1. Sorry for omitting that first time round...

It's been so long since I used P98 and I don't even have a copy of it on my spare machine.

Humour me.

If you're already running Project, click on File | exit.

Start Project
click on View | Gantt Chart
click on the Duration column header
Press the Insert key
Choose "Constraint Type" column
Click on OK
click on the Duration column header
Press the Insert key
Choose "Constraint Date" column
Click on OK

In the first task, click on the Task Name field, enter T1 and press return. This should immediately populate the other columns. Let me know what you see in "Constraint Type" and "Constraint Date".

(As for the paper clip ... in P2003 you can actually remove it from the dropdown Help menu.)
