I have just upgraded a laptop from XP Home to XP Pro.

After installation the taskbar is not appearing. Hitting the WINDOWS key on the keyboard produces nothing.

Everything else seems to be working except from the missing taskbar.

Can anyone help?

Have you tried the following?

Start>Settings>Taskbar and Start Menu>Taskbar Tab>Taskbar Appearance

Untick Auto-Hide if ticked and tick the last three items in this group.

Does it appear in safe mode? (Press F8 during boot to enter safe mode).

Hi All

The problem I have is not so much with the Status Bar, al though thanks for the informtaion as I'm sure I will have the status bar disabled.

The problem is with the taskbar (that includes the START key and the clock, etc). Hitting the WINDOWS key on the keyboard makes no difference. It appears that the START menu has been disabled in some way so I cannot access it.

I am forced to switch off the laptop using the power switch every time.

Then follow along the lines linney started above:

Thanks to all for replying to my mail.

I am starting to pull my hair out.

Here what has happened since last Thursday:

1. Upgraded XP Home to XP Pro SP2.
2. Graphics card drivers had been deleted so restricted to 4 colours.
3. Friday, switched on laptop to find Graphics card drivers now installed, but no taskbar.
4. Monday, switched on laptop to find taskbar is back but following message appears during startup in Windows desktop.....

\\.\DRI_KBFiltr
The system cannot find the file specifed.

Can anyone tell me what this file is and how I can rinstall it onto laptop. Is it an essential system file?

Regards

. For Hewlitt-Packard :
. Others:

Check Add or Remove for a program called Easy Button and remove it.

If the above doesn't help nor apply: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and remove
these two keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Kbdclass

Check the web site of your system manufacturer for an XP driver set; essentially some special keyboard driver is required and missing from an upgrade procedure or just plain missing.

A temporary solution would be to use the Task Manager to Shutdown correctly. Bring up Task Manager with CTRL+Shift+Esc.

Was this a pre-installed version of Home that you upgraded to Pro?

XP Home to Pro Upgrade

"a computer preinstalled with an OEM version of XP Home might not upgrade using a retail version of XP Pro upgrade. This is especially true of laptop computers that have a customized OEM version of XP Home installed. In that case, only a clean install will work. Laptop computers require specialized hardware drivers not found in the conventional "retail, upgrade" version of Windows XP. It would have been best if you had initially called HP support and ordered HP's version of Windows XP
Pro for your specific HP computer." - Carry FISH

"They are actually managed by a software package called "Easy Button" by Dritek Systems (which is probably missing from your computer). Windows 2000 ( XP too probably) detects the keys and tries to install a driver. When it can't find a driver using it's usual methods, you get the DRI_KBFilter message.

You will get the DRI error until you install the appropriate driver for the keys. In my case, the file was downloaded from the Toshiba website (yours too maybe?)
Check out"
