Task Name disappears when indented

When I indent a task, the task name disappears. If I hit F2 to edit the field, it is there, but when I am not editing the text, it is not visible. I have found that if I go into Options and turn off Indent Name on the View tab, that I can see the task names just fine. Is there a way to have the task names indent and still be visible?

I've never seen anything like that happen.

Note that columns are variable width and it is possible to indent a task and it is indented so far that that it is to the right of the rightmost position in the Task Name column.

So ...

How wide is the "Task Name" column?

Is the symbol next to the summary task showing a "minus" sign or a "plus" sign?

Insert the column "Outline Level" and let us know what the numbers are before/after you do the indent.

I'm not sure how to determine the actual width of the "task name" column, but it is long enough to display 36 lower-case letters.

The symbol next to the summary task does show a "minus" sign.

The outline level of the indented tasks is 2 for one and 3 for the other.

If I show the project summary task, then no task names are visible underneath if the "Indent Name" option is on.

I haven't used Project for awhile, but I do know that I wasn't having this problem that last time that I used it. I have also never seen this behavior, and am somewhat baffled by what could be causing it. I currently have "Indent Name" turned off, and it is really only a minor inconvenience, but I am considering reinstalling Project if I can't get this figured out.

There's no *easy* way to determine how wide the columns are. Your description was more than adequate for this discussion - thanks! (For the technically minded: View | Table:xxxxx | More tables ... select a table and then click on the Edit button. You can see the various column widths n the column labelled "Width".)

The "minus" is good .. that means display any subtasks at the next level down.

The Outline Level tells me that you don't have a case where the task is being indented and it's several levels deep in subtasks.

Let's try this:

Make certain the Formatting toolbar is displayed. (View | Toolbars and confirm there is a checkmark next to Formatting).

Click on the column title ("Task Name") so that the entire column is selected.

On the Formatting toolbar click on the "Align Left" button.

Standing by!

Unfortunately, clicking on "Align Left" does nothing to change the situation. I wish there was a way to see the tab stops for the column. It almost seems as if the tab stops are set past the width of the column, but I have made the column as wide as Project will allow, and I still can't see the text. I don't see anything obvious in the registry that might be effecting this, either.

Don't you hate it when computers seem to stop making sense?

Don't I hate it when ... nah ... other way round: I'm *amazed* when they _do_ make sense <g>.

I'd be interested in seeting the file. You can send it to pdqbach4100 at Microsoft's email site.

But I'm stumped!

Anybody else?

I don't think it is the file --- when I open other Project files on my machine, I see the same thing with the names of subtasks not showing. It has to be some configuration somewhere on my machine, but for the life of me I can't figure out where!

If it's happening in other files then, yes, it's not likely to be something I might see when I compared your file to mine. Humour me, though, and create a file with half a dozen tasks (t1, t2, t3, t4, t5, t6) and indent them so I can compare it to what I see.

Which font do you use? My stuff is all default (Arial 8pt).

This is probably a dumb question, but what is Microsoft's email site?

OK, I've sent an email. I'll be surprised if you see what I am seeing, though.
