can some tell if this is the command to restore a whole directory using tar i would like to restore the following

tar -xvf /dev/rmt1 ./r1/oracle/oradata/live/nsb/mercatus under mercatus there are 30 .dbf files which need restoring will the above command restore all 30 files I have already done a tar -tvf and the files exisit on the tape

Looks fine, but take care with your absolute and relative path names. The tar restore shown, will create the directory relative to your pwd, so if you are in /home/fred, the restore will end up in /home/fred/r1/oracle/oradata/live/nsb/mercatus.

You might also want to consider using the -p flag if you want to ensure all the file attributes are restored along with the files.
