i use command
[tar xvfp test.tar]
Result: [test] file has my id and group.
I would like to preserve id and group of original file. I can see that it stored properly when i use [tar tvf].
What could cause such problem?
Steve

Perhaps group does not exist on target host? Grabbing at straws there. IBM Certified -- AIX 4.3 Obfuscation

Thank for advice but Group exists and Id belongs to this Group.

If you extract the files as root they will keep their original group and owner. CaKiwi

Thank you all!
I use pax instead of tar and it worked.
I would tentatively say that it is AIX bug. TAR should be able preserve group.

Yep... tar works fine on the machines I have used it on. I don't use it enough these days to say why. I hear pax is better anyway. IBM Certified -- AIX 4.3 Obfuscation
