Hi,
When doing backups they're failing asking for a new tape to be loaded. I thought it was a problem with the drive itself but the IBM engineer says he checked the drive and it's ok. If I try to run a tar I get :

f2n1eth0(root)/> tar -cvf /dev/rmt0 /tmp
a /tmp
a /tmp/lost+found
a /tmp/vgdata
a /tmp/vgdata/rootvg
a /tmp/vgdata/rootvg/backup.data 128 blocks.
tar: There are 0 blocks on /dev/rmt0.
tar: Mount next media on device /dev/rmt0 and press return.
^Cf2n1eth0(root)/>

Any ideas ?

Check for /tmp if its full!

What is the tape block size?

What happens if you try normal backup and then read from that tape?

Khalid

Also have you tried a new tape?

Sorry, had wrong device there, should have been /dev/rmt0.1.
The TAR worked which was strange as wasn't working friday, but when trying to read from the tape using tar -tvf I got :

f2n1eth0(root)/> tar -tvf /dev/rmt0.1
tar: There are 0 blocks on /dev/rmt0.1.
tar: Mount next media on device /dev/rmt0.1 and press return.

tar: Proceeding to device /dev/rmt0.1.
tar: 0511-193 An error occurred while reading from the media.
The media surface is damaged.

Thought maybe the tape needed to be rewinded, tried this but now I get a message saying "resource is temporarily unavailable".
I'm getting new tapes loaded again to test it out with different tapes but I'm not expecting it to work as was trying this all last week. will let you know how i get on.

/tmp is 8% used. Block size of tape device is set to 0 (variable length).

The rmt0.1 is the no-rewind device.

see man rmt for various options

Yeah as what mike said, try using

tctl rewind

after you read.

Ran the TAR again after changing tapes and it ran ok. Kicked off a savevg aswell and it seems to be running ok. We've changed tapes many times so I'd be surprised if it comes down to bad media.

It happens

Yeah that savevg backup worked! Sorry guys, I'll put it down to bad media, but very strange. Thanks for your help.
